Surrender
It's a silence
A single moment where it sets in
The surrender comes in a single heartbeat
And it's over
Your whole life
Everything that came before is gone
And nothing more could ever be
It's the death of a man
You read all the self help
Heard every breathless prayer
Screamed, pleaded, pretended
And all there is, is nothing
It is giving up
Its knowing that every dream you ever had
Was a phantom, a spectre, a lie
And why bother to dream anymore
There's nothing to look forward to
Just the mendacity of another day
Faces, cars, smiles, meetings, lights
A heart that is bitter and sullen
Black and crusted
Where love should have been
Is a calloused cancerous, bile
Filled lump of coal
Love yourself they say
Love the world they say
Be happy as only you can do it
I look at the world obsessed with self
And status, so dreary and full of pride
So contemptuous and self serving
Pious people on Sundays speaking of a God
Whom they desert at the whims of their desire
I see them making vows they abandon
At the first inkling of a better prospect
I hear words being spoken
Where there is no meaning
No proper intent
Other than to serve their own purpose
What is there to look forward to?
What is there to find joy in?
What hope is there is a Barren world
That is yet so full of "things"
Where you slave to make more money
To buy bigger houses we never live in
To drive faster cars that are governed
By speed limits
To by fancier clothes
That are worn inside the confines
Of an ugly brown office
What happened to forever?
To permanence, truth?
Oh what the fuck ever happened
To the dreams and fancy of my youth?
And yes, ships are safe in the harbour
Yet that is not what they are made for
But this ship is being decommissioned
So there is no sailing anymore
