What is counted
This site uses Google Analytics, a visitor-counting service run by Google. When you open a page it records roughly this much:
- which pages you looked at, and how long you stayed
- approximately where you are — country, province and city, worked out from your internet connection
- what kind of device and browser you used, and the size of the screen
- how you arrived — a search engine, a link from somewhere else, or by typing the address in
- whether you have been here before
Google uses your IP address to work out that approximate location. Charl never sees it. The reports he reads show places and totals — “fourteen people in Gauteng read this” — never a person, an address or a name.
The cookies
A cookie is a small note a website leaves in your browser so it can recognise the same browser next time. The counting above needs two of them, both set by Google Analytics and both lasting up to two years:
_ga— tells one browser apart from another, so two visits from you are not counted as two different people_ga_Y7N2F5SNY2— the same thing, for this site specifically
The music and video players
The player on the home page and the songs on the Music page are supplied by Spotify, and they load as soon as you open those pages. Spotify may set its own cookies when that happens, under its own privacy policy rather than this one.
Videos are handled more carefully. Nothing is requested from YouTube unless you actually click play — until then it is only a still picture — and the player used is YouTube's no-cookie version.
What is never collected
There are no forms on this site. The Contact Me button opens your own email program with a message addressed to Charl, so anything you write goes straight to him and passes through nothing here.
There are no adverts. Nothing collected is sold, shared or handed to anyone beyond the services named above.
Where the site is hosted
The pages are served by GitHub Pages. Like any web host, GitHub receives the request that asks for a page — including the IP address it came from — in order to send it back. That is covered by GitHub's own privacy statement.
How to switch it off
If you would rather not be counted, any one of these works:
- block cookies for this site in your browser's settings
- install Google's own Analytics opt-out add-on
- use any ad or tracker blocker — most block Google Analytics by default
The site works exactly the same either way. Nothing here is locked behind being counted.
Your rights
Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) you may ask what information is held about you and ask for it to be deleted. Write to cjordaan18@gmail.com.
In practice there is rarely anything to look up, because none of what is collected is tied to a name or an address — but ask anyway if you would like to.
Changes to this page
If what the site collects ever changes, this page changes with it. It was last updated on 23 August 2026.
